The Department of State Services (DSS) has formally assumed control of the investigation into the violent attack and alleged abduction of Dr Pedro Obaseki in Benin City, Edo State, following petitions by his legal team describing the incident as terrorism-related.
The development was disclosed in a detailed state-of-the-case press statement issued by Obaseki’s lead counsel, Femi Falana, SAN. According to the statement, DSS headquarters in Abuja has taken over the probe in view of the seriousness, gravity and wider implications of the alleged crimes.
Obaseki was reportedly attacked and abducted on December 28, 2025, in what his lawyers described as a coordinated operation. The incident sparked widespread reactions on social media and among civil-society organisations, raising concerns about human-rights violations and public safety.
Falana confirmed that the DSS agreed to classify the complaint as terrorism-related. He said the intervention reflected recognition of the alleged nature and implications of the acts complained of.
Multiple Petitions Filed
The legal team disclosed that several petitions were submitted to security agencies and oversight bodies, alleging conspiracy, assault, unlawful detention, obstruction of justice and other terrorism-related offences linked to the incident and subsequent developments.
Falana noted that Obaseki is cooperating fully with investigators, adding that any concerns regarding conduct, procedural handling or investigative integrity have been formally documented and forwarded to relevant authorities.
Civil Suits, International Engagement
Beyond the ongoing security probe, the lawyers confirmed that civil proceedings have been filed in Nigerian courts to seek judicial remedies and promote institutional accountability. Falana clarified that the lawsuits are meant to complement, not interfere with, security investigations.
The case has also gained international attention, with petitions reportedly submitted to the ECOWAS Court of Justice, European Union human-rights bodies and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on issues relating to torture, arbitrary detention and abuse of power.
Social Media Notices Issued
Obaseki’s legal team further revealed that notices have been served on digital and social-media platforms over the circulation of videos allegedly showing his assault and abduction. The aim, according to Falana, is to ensure responsible content governance and cooperation with lawful accountability processes.
In a personal statement, Obaseki emphasised that all legal and diplomatic actions are focused on justice, rule of law and accountability. He also dismissed claims that the matter is politically motivated, calling on authorities, civil-society groups and the public to support lawful investigations aimed at identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
Falana added that further updates will be provided as investigations and legal proceedings continue.
