A group of prominent Igbo spiritual figures, led by Chief Mrs. Oliaku Chika Ibeneme, has visited detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre in what observers describe as a symbolic and culturally significant move.
Chief Mrs. Ibeneme, widely known as Nne Mmanwu Igbo Niine (Mother of All Igbo Masquerades) and a former Commissioner for Works and Housing in Anambra State, carried out the visit on behalf of Ndi Nne Mụọ Ala-Igbo nile—the recognized spiritual mothers of Igboland.
In a statement issued afterward, the delegation reaffirmed their strong support for Kanu, referring to him as a valued son of the Igbo nation. During the visit, prayers were offered, ancestral blessings were invoked, and symbolic gifts were presented as a show of solidarity and maternal concern.
The group noted that their intervention reflects the spiritual and ancestral responsibility they hold on behalf of the Igbo people, both living and departed, stressing their resolve to continue advocating for justice and fairness.
Broader Advocacy Initiative
Beyond the prison visit, the delegation announced plans to consult widely with traditional rulers, eminent leaders, and spiritual authorities across Nigeria. According to them, the goal is to promote dialogue and rally moral and cultural support toward securing Kanu’s unconditional release.
They urged Igbo sons and daughters, alongside Nigerians of goodwill, to remain united in prayer and peaceful engagement aimed at achieving justice and lasting harmony.
Kanu remains in custody as legal proceedings continue, with his case drawing sustained attention from various socio-cultural and political stakeholders nationwide.
